At Art Center, if one of your instructors happens to be Richard Pietruska, then you'll probably do the photoreal painting assignment. You were first supposed to shoot your own scrap reference of an interesting part of a classic car. I went up to the Santa Barbara Concours with my roommate Mark Weaver, who works for Lear now, and shot the front of this Mercedes with slide film. We then had to transfer the linework onto cold press illustration board with a projector or transfer paper and paint with gouache, trying to match the photo accurately. I had some difficulty with my old airbrush in the area just above the grille and you can see kind of an odd gradation in that area that looks a little peach colored compared to the rest of the paint. A lot of trans students that graduate from Art Center have this assignment as one of their favorite finished pieces.
